Judge Dredd creators eye film tax breaks

The creators of comic book character Judge Dredd are looking to attract investors to its recently launched film company by taking advantage of tax breaks offered by a government scheme.

2000 AD Films is offering shares for subscription using the Enterprise Investment Scheme in order to get financing to produce live action feature films based around characters and stories from the long-running sci-fi comic books.

The scheme offers investors tax relief of up to 60% on the investment made, and exemption from capital gains tax if they are held for more than three years. Conversely, in the case of failure the scheme can guarantee up to 52% of the investment back. If this isn’t enough to tempt investors, the company is also offering the chance to appear as an extra in one of its films.

Chilton Taylor, EIS specialist at 2000 AD Films’ adviser Baker Tilly, said: ‘The film industry is perceived as extremely high risk so schemes like this are important to attract investors. So far it has had limited success but 2000 AD Films is different as it has an established following and a keen subscription list that should help underpin the funding.’
