The banker at the heart of an offensive by the US government against secret
Swiss bank accounts is making a bid to have his jail term overturned.

Brad Birkenfeld’s evidence was a key part of the Internal Revenue Service
lifting the lid on thousands of undeclared accounts at UBS.

The whistleblower is preparing to start a 40-month stretch in a federal
prison next month, but has claimed US prosecutors made a false statement at his
sentence hearing,
