Aston was one of the members of the North East London Education Association, which took over Hackney Downs School in 1995 and a member of the Hackney LEA Improvement Team in 1997.
He has also been involved in leading a pilot study for the Further Education Funding Council aimed at establishing the new audit framework for the student records audit and was lead partner on the forensic investigation in 2000 into Barnsley College.
