Chancellor reveals surprise Budget date

The Treasury has confirmed that chancellor Gordon Brown will this year deliver his Budget speech on 7 March.
Brown had been widely tipped to make his fifth Budget address on 6 March. But in what could be one of the few surprises coming out of the Treasury this spring, the ‘iron chancellor’ has opted for the day after.
The move follows the trend set in November’s pre-Budget report, when Brown preferred Wednesday over Tuesday. All Budget statements since 1980 have taken place on a Tuesday.
A Treasury spokesperson said there was no significance in the date change, merely that it fitted in with Brown’s other engagements.
AccountancyAge.com is already planning its 2001 Budget coverage and we will be providing news and analysis from the moment Brown stands up at around 3.30pm.
