IT News - Dataquest casts doubt on Netscape's e-mail claims
IT analysts Dataquest has challenged Internet company Netscape over the number of people it claims is using its e-mail software and the results of a recent benchmark study.
Netscape’s launch of third-generation versions of the Suitespot server line was greeted with a chorus of scepticism.
Analysts disputed Netscape’s claim that 12 million people use its software as e-mail clients. They also cast doubt on a recent benchmark study, designed to highlight Suitespot’s scalability power over rival products.
Netscape claimed a study conducted by Key Labs of Utah proved the Suitespot server model supported more than 4,000 users per server, compared with 250 to 500 users a server using competing products.
Dataquest claimed the devil was in the detail and advised people to look at the small print in some of the benchmark studies. The analysts also said that Netscape’s e-mail claims were “way high”.
Bob Lewin, principal analyst at Dataquest, said he did not doubt Netscape had shipped 12 million copies with e-mail capability, “but that’s probably not the same as how many people are using it for e-mail”.
A spokesman for Netscape said the company had surveyed 10,000 of its users to see how many use the e-mail function in their browsers. Netscape then recalculated the percentage of “yes” responses against the 50 million copies of mail-enabled Navigator shipped and came up with the 12 million figure.
