Profession puts in overtime, says study
A staggering 99% of chartered accountants are working more hours than contracted, according to a new survey by the ICAEW.
It also found the average full-timer works 23% longer than contracted.
The majority of the 670 respondents admitted to working outside office hours, with 57% saying they often or always work in the evenings and 37% at the weekend. It also found that 27% do not take their full annual leave.
Overtime seems to cut across the board, affecting salaried employees, the self-employed and both small and large firms. Accountants under 30 were found to be working the longest hours.
But a separate survey conducted by NorthernProfile found these hours well remunerated. Salaries ranged from Pounds 90,000 for finance directors to Pounds 20,000 for newly qualified accountants ? with those in the South paid more.
