Plastic population grows

– Plastics and electronics group Stadium Group has announced the appointment of chartered accountant Nigel Rogers as chief executive. Rogers replaces Jim Johnson who has taken early retirement. After qualifying at the age of 22, Rogers joined Price Waterhouse and for the next eight years worked for the firm in London, the Cayman Islands and Oman. In 1991, he joined the US-based Formica Corporation, then in 1993 joined Stadium as group FD. He played a leading role in the flotation of the company in 1996 and in 1998 was promoted to managing director of the electronics division.

PRACTICE

– Swanley-based accountancy firm Gary Sargeant & Company has appointed Tony Hughes as a partner. Hughes had been working for the practice for the past three years. Other new members of staff include Ian Gregory, an independent tax specialist who became an associate of the firm will be working at on a part-time basis.

– David Prust has been promoted to partner at Clement Keys, Birmingham. Prust has been with the firm for 10 years and is a member of its specialist and charities unit. He is also involved in the firm’s contract to audit grants allocated to UK research institutions by the European Commission in Brussels.

– Mercer & Hole has announced that Gary Farnes will join its Milton Keynes office this month. Farnes joined the owner managed business department of KPMG in 1987 when he qualified with ACCA. He spent 13 years at KPMG before joining Mercer & Hole and will be heading up the unit acting for solicitors across the company.

– Ernst & Young has announced the appointment of Shayne Deighton, an actuary, as a partner. He joins from Zurich Financial Services where he has been finance director of the UK life businesses since 1998. In his new role, based in Dublin, he will lead the development of a life actuarial practice in Ireland.

– KPMG has promoted David Fletcher to partner in its restructuring group based in the London office. Fletcher joined the firm in 1986 and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1989. He spent five years with the KPMG’s Australian corporate recovery practice and returned to the UK in 1997 and joined the firm’s Birmingham office.

– John Twizell has joined Geoffrey Martin & Co, corporate recovery specialists based in Leeds and London. Twizell was formerly with KPMG and has 21 years of experience advising directors and companies in turnaround situations. His appointment as partner will support the growth of the company.

– KPMG Corporate Finance has appointed Gerard Gregg-Smith to lead its healthcare and life sciences team. He joins the firm from his position as director and head of healthcare for pharmaceutical companies, such as Glaxo, and a further 11 years’ experience giving investment-banking advice to healthcare clients. Gerard has headed healthcare M&A operations in London, New York and Tokyo and he is fluent in Japanese, French and German.

– Arthur Andersen has announced the appointment of Sandy Buchanan as a director of its UK life insurance tax division. Buchanan, 50, joins from his previous role as a senior manager with Ernst & Young. Buchanan started his career with the Inland Revenue in 1978, then joined Coopers & Lybrand in 1989 prior to four years with Ernst & Young.

– Hull accountancy firm Sadofskys has appointed Andrew Steele as a partner. He joined the firm 11 years ago and until recently was a manager in its corporate department.

– David Whitelaw has joined Mazars Neville Russell’s London office as a corporate finance director. Whitelaw joins from Paribas where he was responsible for establishing its UK corporate department. He specialises in European cross-border mergers and acquisitions with a particular emphasis on French acquisitions of UK companies.

– Kent-based firm Smith & Hunter has appointed Beverley Aitken as tax partner. Directly involved in tax throughout her career, she is a specialist of trusts, capital gains and inheritance tax. Her appointment reflects the increasing importance of tax consultancy and planning within the practice.

– Steve McCallum has joined Deloitte & Touche enterprise risk services team, to head the business continuity management practice in London. McCallum recently transferred from Deloittes’ Wellington office, New Zealand, where he had been since 1995. A qualified disaster recovery planner, McCallum previously worked with the National Bank of New Zealand for seven years.

INSTITUTES

– The Chartered Institute of Taxation has made Ian Barlow, KPMG’s UK head of tax, and Michael Flesch QC, fellows of the institute in recognition of their contribution to developments in the tax profession. They received their fellowship certificates at a ceremony at the Guildhall in London last week.

– The youngest member of the council of the ICAEW is preparing to take up his seat later this year. Andrew Baigent, 29, is also the first council member who trained outside public practice, through a scheme at the National Audit Office. He is now an audit manager with the NAO and is set to take office on 5 June 2001 and will serve on the council until 2005.
