Government to use tax records for census
The government is considering extracting information from computerised tax records instead of conducting a census in 2011.
The proposal is contained in a response to a report from the Commons Treasury Committee suggesting other means should be examined as an alternative to the expensive full census process.
Ministers are also evaluating what can be extracted from Inland Revenue, benefit records and registers of births, marriages and deaths and the household survey in a bid to reduce costs.
