Van Buitenen strengthens MEP role

Dutch anti-corruption maverick and whistleblowing accountant Paul van Buitenen has joined forces with the Green group in the European Parliament, albeit as independent MEP.

A former Accountancy Age personality of the year, he demanded a seat commanded by the Green/European Free Alliance on the parliament’s influential budgetary affairs committee as his price for joining the group.

Speaking at a press conference, Van Buitenen said: ‘I can deliver my promises in this group. It will be a workable situation.’

He had held negotiations with the eurosceptic, Group for a Europe of Democracies and Diversities (EDD), but was deterred by the extreme anti-Europe position of members such as the UK Independence Party.

‘I’m not a eurosceptic, I’m a eurocritic,’ he said.
