District societies snub meetings

Only two district societies have taken up the ICAEW's offer to hold members' meetings in the run-up to the special general meeting on 11 July.

Despite the institute saying it would seek meetings with all 22 societies only two have been arranged, one of which is with the South Essex society, base of the protest organisers.

The other meeting, to be held on 4 July, is with the Thames Valley district society.

Don Heady, co-organiser of the special general meeting, confirmed that he would be addressing the South Essex members on 5 July, while colleague Noel Kelleway would be speaking at the Thames Valley meeting.

A spokesperson confirmed only two meetings had been organised but said this should be seen in the context of 18 months of consultation.

Heady also hit out against district society officers who had sent letters to their members carrying the message ‘your district society recommends that you vote against the resolution’.

Heady said: ‘I know of no society that has approved this position. There are a number of societies where there is considerable dissent over the proposals.’

Heady added he has received many messages of support for his stand, some from members overseas.
