County cricket champions Sussex face £5m tax bill related to £12m gift from former president

A £12m gift to county cricket champions Sussex could be liable to as much as
£5m in corporation or inheritance tax as HM Revenue & Customs launches an
inquiry into the gift.

The payment was made by former Sussex president Spen Cama, and could
jeopardise the county’s plans to redevelop of the County Ground at Hove,
the Times reports.

The county maintains that the monetary gift was an unsolicited gift and not
taxable, but fears that the investigation could drag on for months or even
years.
