A new independent body setting standards for the public sector should be established, possibly as a ‘sister organisation’ of the Accounting Standards Board, according to a report from the Michael Portillo-inspired Shadow National Accounts Commission. The new body, dubbed the National Accounts Commission, would set standards with the aim of producing independently verified consolidated accounts for central government. Portillo said the Tories had pledged to set up a new accounts commission as part of the party’s economic policy.
