Mystery as small firm's website is top dog

Mystery surrounds how a small Hertfordshire accounting firm last week managed to score a big hit against its global rivals to become the most visited 'global' accountancy site on the internet.

Hicks and Co, a two-partner firm run by Brian Hicks and Martin Corrie, topped the list of accountancy sites for the week ending 25 January, according to internet monitor Hitwise.

By doing so it beat the likes of PricewaterhouseCoopers, which charted at number six, and Ernst & Young at nine. KPMG and Deloitte & Touche did not make the top ten.

The firm was unavailable to comment on its success but with self-assessment deadline approaching Hitwise confirmed a large majority of users visited the Inland Revenue website immediately before going to Hicks. The Revenue has denied any relationship with the firm or its website.

The Revenue was Hitwise’s top government site for the last full week before the self-assessment deadline.
