Trapped in a tangled web.

The government’s decision to create a webmaster general has sparked fears that Whitehall is creating a tangled web of e-ministers. However, Ian McCartney, minister of state at the Cabinet Office, has already been appointed to be responsible for putting government online, Patricia Hewitt, small business minister, looks after e-commerce, while civil servant Alex Allan – who reports directly to the Prime Minister and Hewitt, was appointed last year. The webmaster will report to Allan and manage the content of the government’s UK online portal.
