In stark contrast to last year's US election, the Big Five this week declared themselves apolitical, saying they would not be giving donations to any of the political parties ahead of next month's UK general election.
But KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers both said they had offered the main parties ‘secondments’ ? in which they provide skilled staff to help them.
New records published by the Electoral Commission for the first quarter of 2001 show PricewaterhouseCoopers has provided the Labour Party with a secondment priced at £3,958.
According to a spokesman, this comprised project management work carried out by a staff member, and similar services were offered to other parties.
KPMG admitted to making secondments to all three main parties and said employees do carry out work experience within the trio ‘to help understand the parties’. Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young and Andersen all stated their work environments were non-political.
In last year’s US presidential campaign, more than $3m (£2m) was donated by the Big Five.
