Government ministers are urgently considering whether to risk trying to reverse a Lords defeat extending the powers of the comptroller and auditor general. It follows a victory by Tory, Liberal Democrat and cross bench peers over a key amendment to the government Resources and Accounts Bill. The Lords voted by 124 to 122 in favour of extending Sir John Bourn’s access as of right to any body to which a government department or quango has or can obtain access.
