Speaking at the annual lunch of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Montagu said the Revenue ‘cannot afford to go soft on fraud and avoidance, nor will we be doing so.’
He also described how the morality of tax is more apparent now than ever, saying that the ‘public at large resents large-scale avoidance as dodging the contribution to the UK’s needs’.
By citing recent Revenue activities that involved the searching of 170 locations as part of an investigation into serious fraud in the construction industry, Montagu insisted that ‘we are not going soft on any sector’.
