Lack of payroll skills in public sector
A shortage of skilled payroll administration staff is putting local government and public sector bodies under increasing strain, according to the Association of Accounting Technicians.
Jane Scott Paul, chief executive at the AAT, attributed the demand to the increasing complexity of payroll administration brought about by the changing employment legislation and European directives.
The AAT, which introduced an NVQ/SVQ in Payroll Administration qualification in April last year, said the demand for training has exceeded the association’s expectations by 70%.
‘Employers particularly in the public sector, are finding it more and more difficult to find staff who can tackle these critical issues,’ she said.
The AAT qualification has been introduced at the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, with 17 members of staff currently undergoing training.
Deputy payroll and pension manager Eric Kersey said the qualification was introduced at the local office to ‘enhance the status of payroll throughout the organisation’.
