Club slammed over football transfer deals
A VAT and Duties tribunal has slammed Newcastle United Football Club and some
of Britain’s top football agents over how they arranged football transfer deals.
The tribunal said the club had lied and that the agents had mislead the
Football Association over how they did their deals to avoid being caught
ignoring the rules governing football agents’ conduct, The Guardian
reported.
Last month, the tribunal ruled that the club was not entitled to reclaim VAT
on payments made to agents in 21 deals between 2001 and 2003.
The tribunal found Newcastle United ‘falsely stated’ that the agents had
acted solely for the club, and not for the players, to avoid contravening the
rule that says an agent can only act for one party on a transfer.
Newcastle United said it intended to appeal the judgment.
