Howard ascends the Tory throne
Michael Howard has been chosen as Tory Party leader but the battle to succeed him as shadow chancellor has only just begun.
The 62-year-old Folkestone and Hythe MP was elected unopposed by his Parliamentary colleagues to the job.
Now the former home and trade and industry secretary will submit his name for endorsement by the party membership.
Howard has promised an inclusive party ‘led from the centre’ with a commitment to cutting taxes through greater government efficiency and less bureaucracy.
In his shadow cabinet reshuffle home affairs supremo Oliver Letwin is expected to get Howard’s old job in charge of the Treasury brief ahead of shadow chief secretary Howard Flight with former shadow chancellor Michael Portillo becoming shadow home secretary.
