Revenue staff have had to field millions of calls from taxpayers whose claims had not been processed. At once stage, in May, as many as 500,000 claims were outstanding.

A spokesperson for the Revenue said the decision was in response to the ‘severe pressure’ to which staff had been exposed during the administration of the new system, The Times reported.

At present, 90,000 of the 5.8 million claims remain outstanding.
