Paxton leaps into ERP market

Bedford-based software house Paxton launched an enterprise resource planning package for small companies at Softworld last week.

EMS, which includes sales, marketing and accounts modules, is aimed at companies with between 5 to 30 users. It is based on a Microsoft Access database and includes features for document management, stock allocation and credit control. Typical prices range from #12,000 to #40,000.

Vendors are increasingly targeting mid-sized companies with enterprise applications, but Paxton maintains that little has been produced for the smallest companies.

EMS replaces Paxton’s previous Communicator package, which lacked an accounts module. The company, founded 20 years ago, estimated that the product took 20 man-years to develop.

Paxton managing director Gareth Jones said the decision to offer an integrated business package was prompted by customer demand for software to cover all of its business. ‘Customers wanted more than just an accounts module,’ he said. ‘Every company can handle orders, but the person in accounts also wants to see if someone in sales has just quoted a company for a big deal.’

Jones added that Paxton would also be able to meet the rapid implementation demands of small companies – in contrast to the epic implementations associated with software giants such as SAP.

‘Rapid implementation is the name of the game. Our system can’t be put in overnight but we can put the whole lot in within three weeks,’ he said.
