Birch had been a hot favourite for the chief executive role at the FA, left vacant by former PwC partner Palios, but decided not pursue it following a job interview with the football association.

Birch served in corporate recovery for 18 years with Ernst & Young, before holding chief executive posts at Chelsea, Leeds and, most recently, Everton.
