Return of the magnificent eight.
Only eight of 44 candidates with accountancy backgrounds will be entering the House of Commons after last week’s general election – and they’ve all been there before.
One of the most relieved will be Conservative David Heathcoat-Amory.
His Wells constituency was on a knife edge with a majority of 528. But he trounced Liberal Democrat Graham Oakes, increasing his lead to 2,796.
In a stunning win, Liberal Democrat Ed Davey crushed David Shaw, formerly of Coopers & Lybrand, increasing his majority by 23.5%. Previously Davey had a lead of only 56 votes in the seat of Kingston and Surbiton.
Another Liberal Democrat success was Michael Moore, who was previously at Coopers’ Edinburgh office. He increased his lead by 11% and now holds a majority of 5,157 in Tweeddale, Ettrick & Lauderdale.
Tory Peter Bone, a chartered accountant and former FD, failed to snatch Wellingborough and must be disappointed as Labour’s majority was 187 – the smallest Labour majority in the country.
Justine Greening, who featured on the cover of Accountancy Age last week, failed to take Ealing, Acton and Shepherd’s Bush losing out to Labour’s Clive Soley.
Nick Gibb (Con), Keith Bradley (Lab), Harry Cohen (Lab), David Taylor (Lab), Julia Drown (Lab) and Michael Foster (Lab) all held on to their seats.
