Alastair Smith, an internal candidate, becomes new finance chief

Ofcom has named an internal candidate – Alastair Smith – as its new FD.

Smith will start from February. He joined Ofcom as head of business planning
and analysis in 2005.

Before then he had spent eight years with Cable and Wireless where he
undertook a number of roles including director of planning and analysis and head
of interconnect.

He began his career with First Data Resources in 1990 and qualified ACMA in
1995.

Ofcom’s chief operating officer Jill Ainscough said: ‘Alastair has an
outstanding record of achievement with Ofcom and will be well-placed to provide
continuity both for our finance team and our external stakeholders.’

Smith succeeds Rona Chester who is moving to The Law Society as group finance
director in March.
