Some of the City's biggest institutions have bucked the trend, which has seen mounting criticism of the Higgs' report, by coming out, en masse, to support the proposed new code.

Institutions including, Aegon, Co-operative Insurance Society, Gartmore, Henderson, Isis, JP Morgan Fleming, Isis, Merrilly Lynch Investment Managers and Schroders called for the measures proposed by Derek Higgs to be implemented without delay.

They made their feelings known in letters written to the Financial Times and said they supported the ‘thrust’ of changes proposed by the review.

Sides are quickly being drawn over Higgs, with many of the FTSE-100 being openly opposed to the measures.
