Internet appliances to 'outnumber PCs'

Internet appliance shipments will out number PC shipments by 2005 and there will be a plethora of other devices.

Brian Halla, chief executive at National Semiconductor, said in his keynote at the Comdex show that as global internet traffic doubles every 100 days, ‘we will have an exponential explosion’.

Halla said: ‘Everything is enhanced by the internet.’

He talked about nine internet appliances on the market today, such as the web pad and set-top boxes, and said there will soon be more.

According to Halla, National Semiconductor, which sells processors used inside devices such as internet appliances, has seen more than 200 different designs.
