Business recovery expert Birch, who has served in high-profile roles at Chelsea, Leeds and most recently Everton, has consistently been linked with the job following Mark Palios’ resignation.

PKF corporate recovery head Philip Long recently told Accountancy Age that Birch would be ‘a very good option’ for the FA role.

Last week Richard Scudamore ruled himself out of contention for the post.
