Local government FDs urged to take on a more stratgic role

A statement from the public sector accountancy body says FDs should be members of an authority’s corporate management team and the role of the FD should not be combined with the role of chief executive.

John Scotford, chairman of the CIPFA working group, said: ‘The statutory responsibilities of a finance director in local government are unique and it is therefore important that he or she operates in a structure that enables those responsibilities to be discharged properly. But mere compliance with the law is not what makes a good finance director.

‘To be really effective a finance director must make a positive contribution and be innovative, through having the right approach to finding solutions.’
