Ric Piper, the former finance director at WS Atkins, was due to start yesterday but was told not to bother after a shock profits warning at the engineering consultancy sent its share price crashing by 72%.
Many of the problems at Atkins were down to poor financial control including the disastrous introduction of a new computer system which resulted in Piper being late in invoicing £25m of work.
He was due to receive a salary of about £300,000 which many believe will be paid out to Piper in compensation.
