New shadow chancellor Michael Portillo has reaffirmed the opposition of the Conservative party to the IR35 ‘stealth tax‘ on self-employed consultants and pledged that if they were elected to government they would scrap the levy. He said it would heap an extra £475m in national insurance on specialists and consultants hitting up to 66,000 hi-tech entrepreneurs, mainly in the IT field.
