ACCA to widen disciplinary structure

ACCA is set to look at ways of recruiting more overseas and female experts to sit on its disciplinary panels.

Speaking at last week’s open council meeting at its London headquarters, Michael Steiner, chairman of the ACCA appointments committee, outlined his intention to ensure that the issue was at the top of the agenda at the next panel meeting, which is due to take place in the autumn.

Steiner said: ‘As we have a wide overseas membership, it is essential that we have to consider the issue of overseas representation, particularly when we are dealing with matters stemming from abroad.’

He added: ‘The matter of recruiting non-UK-based and female panellists is on the agenda for our next meeting. However, it is important to note that, at the moment, we do not have any public interest cases from outside the UK and Ireland.’

The institute is expected to embark on targeted advertising to attract suitable candidates to increase the pool from which the panel members are selected for public interest cases.

Minor overseas cases are dealt with by their national governing bodies.

ACCA is also set to tackle the issue of increasing its pool of insolvency practitioners.
