Tory leadership hopeful backs tax reform

Clarke supporter Malcolm Rifkind - still a possible leadership candidate in his own right - backs simplification of tax system

Tory leadership challenger Sir Malcolm Rifkind – widely thought likely to
back former Chancellor Ken Clarke in the forthcoming Tory leadership battle –
has said One Nation Conservatives would support a major reform and
simplification of the tax system.

Rifkind said reform would be desirable in itself and release considerable
savings which could be used to  reduce the tax burden.

He added: ‘Tax cuts, in the first instance, would be used to benefit low
earners, pensioners and others who have lost out in recent years.’
