Hague: Brown exploiting stealth taxes
Tory leader William Hague attacked Gordon Brown's last Budget before a general election accusing him of 'cynically' exploiting stealth taxes introduced by Labour since 1997 to win votes.
Hague concentrated his reaction on what he described as the 45 stealth taxes he said had been introduced by Labour.
Brown, he said, was only able to spend as much as he did in the Budget because of the money saved in those measures.
‘Every pronouncement he has made is set against the massive increase in taxes he has already introduced.’
He added: ‘To suddenly turn up with tax reductions is a cynical election Budget.’It gives back to people for a limited period only a tiny part of what the chancellor has taken from them.’
Hague said the budget would only benefit people who ‘who never drive, never drink, never smoke and don’t even have a local council’.
