Think of a number ...

With the next Harry Potter film soon to arrive at cinema screens nationwide, it is worth considering some of the numbers, one former unemployed, single mother generated when she sat down to write about the adventures of a boy wizard.

In fact, Rowling’s wizardry has far outshone her creation. To date, the four Harry Potter books have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, and have been translated into 42 languages. When the fourth installment: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire went on sale in November 2000, it sold 350,000 copies on the first day, making it the fastest-selling book in history. It also became the most sold book on Amazon.com, shifting 400,000 copies.

Rowling is one of the richest women in Britain – the latest Sunday Times rich list put her fortune at #226m, enough to fund Hogwarts on her own!

And that’s nothing compared to the films. Internet movie bible, imdb.com says Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has made £610m to date, the second highest grossing film of all time, after Titanic (£1.13bn).

And that’s not counting DVD sales and merchandise which sells by the truckload!

The mind boggles what numbers Rowling will next conjure up, with three books and six movies to come …
