Tax in the City

THE DUTCH laissez-faire attitude to ladies of the night doesn’t stretch to the taxman, TS understands.

Amsterdam newspaper Het Harpool reports that the Dutch government is cracking down on the city’s sex workers. Although prostitution was legalised more than a decade ago, the tax service has largely left the oldest profession alone, but no longer.

As Dutch tax service spokesman Janneke Verheggen told the Guardian: “We began at the larger places, the brothels, so now we’re moving on to the window landlords and ‘the ladies’.” We bet you are, Janneke… nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
