Grant Thornton launches new trainee program to bridge skills gap

Grant Thornton UK LLP  has announced the launch of new  onboarding program aimed at equipping new trainees with essential professional skills. The initiative, named “Career Launchpad,” is set to commence in September 2024 for the firm’s Audit practice trainees.

The program, which spans an initial 12 weeks of intensive practical and skills-based learning, was developed in response to research highlighting a significant gap in workplace readiness among young professionals. A survey conducted by Grant Thornton in July 2024, involving 2,000 young people, revealed that despite 70% having work experience, many felt underprepared for crucial aspects of professional life, particularly in areas such as verbal presentation, persuasion, influencing, and networking.

“We are excited about the positive impact Career Launchpad will have on our trainees. By providing a supportive foundation and addressing the softer skills essential for success, we are dedicated to empowering our trainees for a successful and fulfilling career journey at Grant Thornton,” said Vicky McLoughlin, Audit Partner and sponsor for Career Launchpad.

A key feature of Career Launchpad is its focus on mental well-being and resilience. Recognizing the challenges faced by new entrants into the workforce, especially in light of recent global events such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the program refrains from involving trainees in client work during the initial 12-week period. Instead, it concentrates on technical training, exams, professionalism, and building personal resilience.

The initiative also incorporates a simulated work environment, allowing trainees to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills in a safe space. This approach not only benefits the trainees but also enables Grant Thornton to assess the program’s effectiveness continually.

Career Launchpad represents a significant shift from traditional onboarding programs, reflecting Grant Thornton’s commitment to fostering diverse talent and ensuring equal opportunities for success within the firm. As the September launch approaches, the company anticipates positive outcomes for its new cohort of trainees and the long-term benefits for both the individuals and the organization.

This innovative approach to trainee development could set a new standard in the professional services industry, potentially influencing how other firms prepare their new recruits for the challenges of the modern workplace.
