Smith Cooper and Thomas St John appoint new directors

Business advisory and accountancy firm Smith Cooper has promoted Paul Kurowski from senior audit manager to director, following his certification as a Responsible Individual (RI).

Kurowski joined the firm in 2016 and brings his extensive experience in auditing and compliance into this role. As a RI, Kurowski is now able to sign audit reports on behalf of Smith Cooper Audit, as he also continues to look after compliance concerns, business operations, and conduct strategic business reviews.

Stephen Newman, a partner at Smith Cooper, said: “Paul has extensive knowledge and expertise in the field of Audit and Assurance, having accumulated over 20 years’ experience in both industry and practice roles, and his progression is very well deserved.

“Having worked in various types of business before moving into practice, Paul understands the audit process from both a client and auditor perspective.”

Kurowski will continue to work out of the firm’s Birmingham office and sit on the firm’s National Audit Committee.

TSJ appoints new director

In London, international tax and accountancy firm Thomas St John has appointed Gary Rowson as its new UK tax director, capitalising on Rowson’s 20 years of experience.

Previously, Rowson specialised in tax dispute resolution and EBT/EFRBS settlement negotiations for high-profile clients, most recently at Lancaster Knox LLP.

Thomas St John, owner of the TSJ Group, said: “The landscape has changed and tax is now a real reputational issue. Gary can help clients anticipate and avoid problems with the tax authorities and, if historic issues need resolving, he can confidentially secure terms for both settlement and payment.”

TSJ currently holds offices in London, Los Angeles and Amsterdam, focusing on providing accountancy and tax advice for creative businesses. Moving forward, Rowson has been fully integrated into the firm’s planning and operations.

“I’m thrilled to be working with TSJ and in such a diverse and exciting industry,” Rowson said. “Understanding how the tax authorities think and work is a huge advantage. If you manage the issues and personalities involved proactively, you can often achieve a better result.”
