Grant Thornton and BDO appoint new partners

Grant Thornton UK LLP has promoted Joanne Brown to partner to lead its public services offering in Scotland.

With over 18 years’ experience providing audit and assurance services to a range of public sector organisations, Brown’s most recent role was head of the public services assurance team in Scotland. She joined the firm in April 2015 and has significant experience in supporting organisations with their governance arrangements and improving internal controls, including demonstrating value for money.

“I am thrilled to be leading our public services offering in Scotland as we continue to invest in growing the team and developing our wider offering for clients,” said Brown.

“I am committed to strengthening our reputation in the Scottish market and, as a team, we are dedicated to ensuring public sector organisations can continue to provide the vital services we rely on every day. I look forward to working with our expert team to deliver challenging, quality work for our clients during a period of significant uncertainty,” she added.

Grant Thornton said that Brown’s promotion demonstrated the firm’s commitment to the Scottish public sector. In her new role, Brown will lead the firm’s wider public services offering across Scotland working with health, central government, local government and not for profit organisations. She will also continue to support the development of the firm’s internal audit offering to public sector clients nationally.

Sarah Howard, head of public services, Grant Thornton UK LLP, commented: “I am delighted to announce that Joanne has been promoted to partner and will be leading our public services offering in Scotland. The public sector is a core priority for our firm and Joanne’s promotion demonstrates our continued commitment to growing our presence in the Scottish market.

“Our public services have never been more at risk and it is vital that we are able to effectively support organisations in moving towards a more sustainable future. Joanne’s in-depth knowledge of the Scottish market will be critical to ensuring we continue to make a positive difference for public sector organisations across the country.”

BDO grows tax team

Meanwhile, BDO LLP has grown its tax expertise with the appointment of two new partners last week.

Ian Bowden will join BDO as a tax technology expert, after 20 years at PwC. Bowden will focus on helping clients utilise existing and new IT systems and work with them to take advantage of the latest technology developments in finance.

Also joining the firm is Jon Claypole who is a partner in the firm’s tax dispute resolution team. BDO say that Claypole will use his “significant experience” to resolve disputes with HMRC across BDO’s full spectrum of clients with a focus on corporates. Claypole was previously national head of tax at Mazars.

Earlier this year BDO announced its merger with Moore Stephens LLP was complete, and since January the firm has appointed 14 new partners across the firm.

Paul Eagland, Managing Partner at BDO, commented: “As technology continues to disrupt the way we work we aim to give our clients even more added-value in this area. Ian’s knowledge and expertise of tax technology make him a fantastic addition to the partnership.

“Our tax disputes and resolutions team is also in high-demand and Jon’s appointment will allow the team to continue to serve a growing number of clients in this area at a consistently high-standard.

“Since January we have recruited and promoted almost 30 new partners across the firm. It is fantastic to see BDO continuing to cement our position as the leading advisor to the UK’s mid-sized, entrepreneurially-spirited businesses.”
