New Newcastle partner for EY offices

Mike Scoular will be adding to the increasing financial service division team in this region

EY has announced a new Newcastle partner who will be leading the firm’s fast-growing financial service division, thus highlighting the Big Four firm’s commitment when building their managed services business in the region.

In their statement, the report read: “Partner Mike Scoular, who also heads up managed services across the UK, has relocated to Newcastle from EY’s Edinburgh office to head up and grow the north east financial services business, which works with financial institutions across the country.”

Mike Scoular said: “We are growing rapidly in Newcastle because of the great local talent available. We are servicing banks and other financial institutions that are based out of London and across the country with exceptionally talented people. We are also doing so in new and innovative ways—drawing on intelligent automation and other technologies.”

Scoular has worked with EY for 16 years, previously having qualified as a chartered accountant at Arthur Anderson in Scotland. Now he will be overseeing up to 450 people in Newcastle who work within EY’s financial services.

He continued: “EY recognises that our regions are important drivers of UK growth and there is a real buzz and sense of ambition amongst my fellow partners and the team here.”

As the second high profile financial services partner from EY to have relocated to Newcastle in recent years, he will be supported by Saskia Hawkins, a partner who moved from London at the end of 2016.

Hawkins’ team currently provides clients with a “full suite of outsourced and managed financial services and works closely with banks, wealth and asset managers, insurance companies, and FinTechs.” Hawkins is also the European leader for financial services, accounting compliance, and reporting.

Somebody else who heads part of the Newcastle team is Trevor Sherlock; he is the head of the personal tax centre.

Sandra Thompson, EY’s Newcastle office managing partner, concluded: “I’m very pleased to welcome Mike, who has been brought in to pull our rapidly growing north east financial services business together. He has relocated to take on this role demonstrating EY’s recognition of the benefits of having highly experienced, senior people on the ground in this region. This level of continued investment in our Newcastle offices, along with our refurbishment, is testament to the level of growth and opportunity in our region.”
