Our 35 Under 35 2018 list celebrates young talent in the accountancy industry. Here are the next five individuals included in our ranking.

25. Michael McAllister, Manager, Payroll, Mazars LLP

McAllister is head of Mazars’ Scottish payroll centre, which he launched on joining the firm in 2013. He manages a team of 11 payroll specialists working with over 400 clients. He is also on the senior payroll leadership board.

He has a client-centric approach and his business development and client management skills have led to three promotions in quick succession from team leader through to his current role.

24. James Edgell, Group Financial Controller, Alliance Pharma plc

Edgell started the KPMG graduate programme in audit in 2008 ahead of joining Alliance Pharma as a financial accountant in 2013. He was promoted to financial controller in 2014 and in 2015 acted as interim finance director for four months during which he played a key role in a number of acquisitions, including that of Sinclair Healthcare Products business.

After the Sinclair acquisition, Edgell was promoted to group financial controller. He has been key to growing and restructuring Alliance’s finance function in a high growth acquisitive environment, and his number of reports have increased from two to 14 in the past four years.

23. Adam Spires, Director, BDO

Spires joined BDO as a senior manager in 2015, and was promoted to director in 2017. He has played a key part in business development within the public sector internal audit team at the firm, and has contributed to record levels of client satisfaction in the market.

He is recognised by peers, clients and colleagues as an innovator, and has developed new methodologies and toolkits to better reflect the risk environment for clients. Outside of BDO, he has taken on voluntary roles to develop his skills, including the role of audit committee chair and governor at a local further education institution. He has recently been appointed to the audit committee of Sport England, a nationally recognised role.

22. Matt Portt, Founder, Portt & Co

Portt launched Portt & Co in 2015 with a £5,000 start-up loan, providing payroll and bookkeeping services. The firm has grown to a team of nine and clients range from those with only a handful of employees to organisations with over 400 staff members. Portt & Co will soon open an office in the Philippines to carry out purchase invoice processing with the time difference meaning that invoices will be worked on overnight and ready for review by the UK team the following morning.

Portt ensures that the firm is at the forefront of technology, embracing automation for clients. The firm has previously been shortlisted in the new firm of the year category at the British Accountancy Awards.

21. Philip George, Partner, Forrester Boyd

George joined Forrester Boyd on leaving university, and received successive promotions ahead of being offered partnership after nine years at the firm. He is in his second year as partner and is responsible for a portfolio of £550,000.

George is responsible for external business growth and in collaboration with the business development manager actively seeks new business opportunities by informing clients of the potential benefits of cloud accounting.

In 2015, George received the Young Chartered Accountant of the Year award in his region.
