Financial Power List 2018: 31-35 revealed

We reveal the individuals who have made positions 31-35 on the Financial Power List 2018

Compiled by the Accountancy Age editorial team, the Financial Power List 2018 ranks the 50 individuals who we believe will have significant influence on the direction of the accountancy industry over the next 12 months. Individuals considered for the list span government, practice and business with the rankings reflecting who has the power to make an impact in 2018.

Make sure you check back to view the full rankings, which will be released on 31 January, with five individuals announced every day between now and the end of the month.

Here, we reveal the individuals who have made positions 31-35 on this year’s list.

35. Rob Whiteman, CEO, CIPFA

Whiteman has a big challenge ahead in 2018. With no CIPFA members holding a CIPFA awarded audit qualification, the Financial Reporting Council has revoked recognition of the association as an audit qualifying body. Whiteman will be hoping that the development doesn’t have a knock-on effect and that he can continue to build on the association’s 14,000-strong membership.

34. John McDonnell, Shadow Chancellor

It’s a busy year for those in parliament, and McDonnell will be looking to capitalise on any perceived moment of weakness displayed by those in government. The Spring Statement will be the first big opportunity for McDonnell to cause a stir, and he’ll be pushing back all the way on any policy that looks to favour big business or the wealthy. He’ll be dreaming of another U-turn at some point in 2018, and that’s most certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.

33. Phil Verity, UK Senior Partner, Mazars

Mazars recorded 8% growth in 2017 and Verity will be intent on taking the firm to dizzier heights this year. Steadily increasing partner numbers in recent years, 2018 is likely to hold further appointments, strengthening the Mazars’ place in the top 10 firms in the UK.

32. Jean Stephens, CEO RSM International

RSM is off to a flying start in 2018 having already added two new member firms in Bulgaria and Costa Rica. Leading the way in strengthening the RSM brand, Stephens will be focused on maintaining and developing standards across the member firms this year, with a drive to attracting talent and offering a better service to clients. Stephens is a big advocate of gender diversity amid mounting pressure for UK firms to review and improve career opportunities and pay structures.

31. Rakesh Shaunak. Group Chairman, MHA MacIntyre Hudson

Shaunak steered MHA MacIntyre Hudson to 10.9% growth last year, closing in on 15th position in the Top 50+50 Accountancy Firms rankings. Can he lead the firm to further growth this year? He’ll be hoping to build on the success of the firm’s tax services offering of 2017, fee income from which grew 20.8%. A great opportunity for MHA MacIntyre Hudson to make waves in the rankings lies ahead in 2018.
