MORE ICAEW members are helping govern the UK this week, as the institute swelled its number of MPs.
The institute now has 13 representatives sitting as members of parliament, up from ten at the previous General Election in 2010.
Senior positions are held by Putney MP Justine Greening, as secretary of state for international development, and Therese Coffey, who has been named deputy leader of the House of Commons.
Iain Wright, MP for Hartlepool, is the only Labour representative among the ICAEW’s MPs.
Craig Mackinlay, a member of both the ICAEW and CIoT who works in Kent-based firm Beak Kemmenoe, saw off Nigel Farage in the hotly-contested Thanet South seat.
Kit Malthouse joins parliament as North West Hampshire MP, while Anne-Marie Trevelyan brought in the Conservatives at Berwick for the first time in four decades.
CIPFA-qualified Peter Grant is now MP for Glenrothes, representing the SNP.
However, the latest voting hasn’t been as kind to the other institutes, with others understood to have few representatives. CIMA and ACCA saw Naomi Smith and Ian Swales, respectively, didn’t stand again in their seats. However, CIMA associate member Elizabeth Truss is Conservative MP for south-west Norfolk.
ICAS’s John Mason is a member of the Scottish parliament, representing the Scottish National Party for Glasgow Shettleston.
