BPP attains university status

BUSINESS and accounting studies organisation BPP has attained university status.

The BPP University college of Professional Studies, which offers qualifications in business, law, finance, tax, accountancy and healthcare, has become BPP University.

The status was confirmed by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

Professor Carl Lygo, BPP chief executive, said: “I am delighted that BPP University becomes the UK’s first independent private university dedicated to business and the professions. I congratulate BIS on its thorough review of BPP which clearly set very high standards for all those aspiring to become a UK university.”

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said the sttaus change was an “important step” in diversifying the education sector. “A wide range of higher education providers helps broaden access, focuses attention on teaching quality and promotes innovative learning methods.”

BIS is responsible for managing the process and criteria for non-higher-education-funded organisations applying for university status.
