THE HEAD of the government body looking at simplifying the tax regime has defended his suggestion to consider merging national insurance and income tax.
John Whiting, tax director of the Office for Tax Simplification and CIoT tax policy head, responded to web comments posted on Accountancy Age’s website that criticised the proposal as potentially increasing pensioners’ tax bills.
He said that the OTS team were “well aware” of the current national insurance exemptions, and such issuers would be taken into account before and change in tax rules were made.
“I think we have to look at this whole area – even if many people have looked at it before. And there will be plenty of time to comment on our reports before any changes results,” said Whiting.
