Board considers Douglas Flint for HSBC chairman's role to end infighting
Fresh speculation has emerged over the future of HSBC finance director
Douglas Flint which has now centered on whether he is next in line to chair the
bank’s board.
A report in the Financial Times suggests Flint could be the
compromise candidate for the chairman’s job because the board is struggling to
make a decision between Michael Geoghegan, the current chief executive, and John
Thornton, a non exec at the bank and a former chief at Goldman Sachs.
Reports in the press earlier this week suggested Geoghegan has threatened to
resign if Thornton was given the chairman’s job.
But Flint also figured in speculation at the beginning of the week that he
could be among the possible contenders for the CEO’s post at Lloyds Banking
Group following the resignation of Eric Daniels. The contenders are thought to
include Helen Weir, a former FD at Lloyds and now leading its retail business
and the bank’s current FD Tim Tookey.
