    EC in legal action over public spending rules

    European Commission attempts to enforce implementation of EU accounting rules for public spending on Sweden, Austria and Czech Republic

    Legal action is being taken by the European Commission to force Sweden,
    Austria and the Czech Republic to implement European Union (EU) accounting rules
    regarding public spending.

    Brussels is particularly vexed with Sweden, sending it a formal complaint
    that it has flouted a 2004 European Court of Justice (ECJ) order to properly
    implement directive 2000/52/EC on transparent relations between governments and
    other public bodies.

    If Sweden continues to ignore the ruling it could face large recurring fines
    until it complies.

    Austria is facing a first formal warning to comply with the same directive,
    and the Czech Republic a warning to comply with this legislation and three
    associated EU laws.
