Despite claims that a good company culture and work life balance are important ways of retaining staff, access to new business challenges is still the main driving force behind many decisions to move on, according to an online survey conducted by recruitment consultancy Robert Walters.
Three quarters of respondents said either better career development prospects or the desire for a new challenge had fuelled their decision to look elsewhere.
And only 13% of the 3,000 respondents said money was the main motivator for moving on. But many candidates expect a little bit extra anyway, according to Robert Walters.
‘Although candidates may not be solely motivated to move jobs for more money, it is my experience that regardless of the current market conditions, most candidates expect and require some form of increase when evaluating whether to accept a new position,’ said Robert Walters regional director Gerry Chesterman.
One in ten respondents said they were on the look out for a new job because they didn’t like the culture at their current company. Just two per cent of respondents said it was because they didn’t like their current boss.
