When we reported last August that employers and fleet operators feared company car tax bills would be seriously inaccurate when the system takes effect in April, the Inland Revenue issued a strong denial designed to reassure users.
As well as accusing us of being misleading, the Revenue explained that where employers submitted information it expected them ‘to take reasonable care to find accurate CO2 figures by identifying the car model correctly’.
That now seems a bit rich. Last week the Revenue was been forced to apologise after admitting it had miscalculated tax bills ‘because of a problem with the transfer of information between our computer systems’.
The new system is but a matter of weeks away from launch and the Revenue has little time to restore faith in it. It has now pledged to issue coding notices to employers before the end of March. Officials must ensure that happens if the new system is to win popular support.
