Andersen to probe BBC accounts

Andersen to probe BBC accounts

The BBC has confirmed Big Five firm Andersen is probing into its accounts following an alleged fraud in connection with its Worldwide division.

The media giant said after consulting with BBC’s director of finance John Smith and Chief executive Rupert Gavin, director general Greg Dyke appointed Andersen as ‘independent auditors to report on issues surrounding the alleged fraud against BBC Worldwide.’

It added Jeff Taylor, BBC’s director of global marketing and brand development, had been bailed after helping the Independent Commission Against Corruption in Hong Kong with inquiries. He has not been charged.

A spokeswoman told AccountancyAge.com ‘The BBC take the situation very seriously and have moved quickly to contain and investigate the situation.

‘We had launched our own internal inquiry and thoroughly support the appointment of Andersen.’

She added Andersen was looking at the whole situation, but could not be more specific about what the accountants were investigating.

Since the emergence of the allegations the BBC has terminated a contract with toy sourcing company EMS and put in a manager to complete its outstanding obligations.
